So and So Has Invited You to. . .

I don't join many Facebook groups. I don't add many Facebook apps. I don't join any Facebook "causes" or petitions.

Because I think they are useless.

I mean, what's the point of being a part of the Disney Princess Fan Club? Why not just say on your profile, "I like Disney princesses."? If it's a group that does something or means something, then maybe I will join. For instance, if the group sends messages to each other, arranges meetings or get-togethers or something like that, then it might be worth my while. But if you sign up for the group and never do anything with it, it's not much of a group, now is it?

Lots of people start groups when they lose their phones and need every body's phone numbers or when they are getting married. I don't join these groups. I just go to the group page, write my info on the wall and head out. Because, as a group, what will we all do when Ichabod finds his phone again? Or when Maybelle and Jedediah actually tie the knot?

There are a few applications that are really cool and really useful, but most of them are garbage. If you want to add the "Beautiful Angel" app and want to award me with the "Most High Beautiful Angel" award, I will click "ignore." Look, if you think I'm beautiful and in need of that knowledge, then write it on my wall or send me a message.

On the other hand, if you discover an app that is really neat and useful, feel free to share with me. One app that I especially like is "Where I've Been," an interactive map that lets me chart where in the world I have lived or traveled and where I'd like to go. I can even compare where my friends have lived and traveled, and that is a pretty cool feature as well. I used to work on the app called "We're Related," and I think it is pretty cool as well. It still needs work, but it has great potential for being useful and relevant.

You want to play a game with me via a Facebook app? I'm all for it. Probably. If it's a game that I'd like, then send it my way. You like Scramble? Bring it on! Again, games are meaningful- in a way. They provide some sort of interaction and engagement. As opposed to, say, a "Rock Star" app which says, "Hey, I think you're a rock star!" or, even worse the dreaded "Vampire" app which invites you to "Start biting chumps." Invite me to that, and it is a one-way ticket to "Ignore all invites from this person."

Now, to causes. Facebook causes are pretty new. It seems as though you can join different causes and donate money to them. Other than that, I'm not sure what the point is. My mom recently invited me to an Anti-Child Abuse Cause. Certainly a worthy cause, it's just that I don't see the point of signing up for it on Facebook. I mean, pretty much every one is against child abuse. Heck, even most child abusers are against child abuse! Signing up for a Facebook cause doesn't actually solve anything.

I'd even say that joining Facebook petitions and "causes" is meaningless because it is too easy. You want to show the Facebook people how much you hate the new layout? Don't just whine about it, write a complaint and end your service. (Although, hey, it's a FREE service, so I'm not sure they'd care too much. I guess you're better to suck it up!) Want to show the world that you can be one million strong against Hillary Clinton? Then donate money to somebody else, work on somebody else's election, canvass for somebody else, and get out and vote for somebody else. Adding your name to a list just doesn't mean much. As always, actions speak louder than words.

So, if you invite me to a group or application or cause, don't be offended when I don't jump on the bandwagon with you. It's not that I necessarily disagree with you and your cause (although I might), it's just that I think such things are rather silly and not worth my Facebook profile space.

I couldn't agree more. People are always sending me things. I click on them and it leads me to a screen that says I have to send the same thing to another 12 people to receive it - and so it goes on. I mean, what's the point? Scrabble, now, is essential to life. :D

Amen. Amen, amen, amen.

Meh. You can usually donate to the cause via the link on FB. Not a bad idea altogether if you're really interested in whatever cause is being promoted.

Could not have said this better myself! Have been invited a number of times to join the "Mormons are Christians" cause which personally I think is a RIDICULOUS WASTE OF TIME! If that happens to be someone's opinion then how is a silly Face Book group going to convince them otherwise? Thank you!!
