A Library at Home

One of the great things about house-sitting is that the people we house-sit for have a lot of books. Gads of books. Mountains of books. When I got here the other night and was waiting for Eric to finish getting ready for bed, I pulled the following off the shelves:

I think they will make a great start. And, bonus! There are no due dates.

In case the photo is not clear, the books are:
  • These is My Words by Nancy E. Turner
  • Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin
  • Reading Lolita in Tehran by Azar Nafisi
  • A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini
  • The Goose Girl by Shannon Hale
  • The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
  • O Pioneers! by Willa Cather
  • The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold
Only, probably not in that order. I've already started the first two. And I'm not entirely sure about The Lovely Bones. My friend, Trish, really hated it, but it's gotten pretty good reviews. Any thoughts?

Ew. The Lovely Bones. We listened to it on CD and it was very traumatizing. I can see why it's very famous, but if you don't like rape/murder/sicko details, I'd skip it.

Even rape disturbingness aside, I really hated The Lovely Bones. To quote my favorite review on GoodReads, "This isn't a story, it's a situation."

I've read:
These is My Words
Three Cups of Tea
A Thousand Splendid Suns
The Goose Girl
The Kite Runner
The Lovely Bones

The Lovely Bones was weird. I read the book and will NOT see the movie. The Kite Runner has some violence and sexual abuse which I felt traumatizing as well. I enjoyed A Thousand Splendid Suns more but it also has violence in it.

I REALLY enjoyed These Is My Words! My favorite of the books you listed

Coming from non-Mormon country, I will admit that I did like the Lovely Bones. I'm not dogging on Mormons ( I am one) but when a Utah Mormon gave me Twilight to read with the back cover hidden so I wouldn't be prejudiced against the vampire content and not read it, I had to laugh.

I just finished These is My Words...Loved It! I read The the Lovely Bones, and did not love it but I thought it was interesting and worth reading, but certainly wouldn't put it at the top of the list. Definately disturbing, but not overly graphic. I did listen to it on tape so I might have missed something...
